A jubilant Gold Coast Women’s team after a fantastic victory over Moreton Bay (Kelly Donnelly)

A combination of a high press and some fantastic inter-play saw United blast out of the blocks and stun the Jets at Wolter Park, holding on for a memorable 2-0 win against the much fancied fourth placed Moreton Bay.

Early goals from Mackenzie Akins and Meg McElligott were enough to take the points, with a solid defensive effort the key to the win. An inspired turnaround for the visitors, the break last weekend providing plenty of time for soul searching after a less than best performance against Lions at Station Reserve.

An ecstatic Michael Cook after the game found it hard to single out any one reason for the result.

“This was a completely deserved win tonight with our team dominating throughout the match.

“Going forward some of our combination play was sublime, especially in the first half.

“But what was most pleasing was the way we pressed without the ball. Every single player worked tirelessly tonight and as a unit we defended with great discipline and aggression.”

A massive swing in fortunes for the squad’s newest recruit, Cassandra Zaffina after a less than memorable debut against Lions. For many the shot-stopper was the key to the Coast’s win, snuffing out several promising chances for the hosts and generally directing traffic with assuredness from the back.

According to Cook, “it’s hard to single out individuals after a performance where every player should take the plaudits, but Cassie Zaffina showed her class in goal with a couple of super saves and Neesa Doyle was the very definition of a captain tonight.”

The Women return to Station Road next Sunday with renewed confidence and will be hoping to repeat last night’s dose against South West Queensland Thunder.

“The next match can’t come quickly enough now, as we look to build on this great result.” Michael Cook
