Local lads step up

Aniss Laghai & Zack Kallinikos, the latest signings for the 2020 Men’s squad

Kristian Rees has shown faith in two more young local players giving them an opportunity to impress in the 2020 National Premier Leagues competition. Aniss Laghai and Zack Kallinikos get their chance and are excited for the season ahead.

Rees has been impressed by both players’ endeavor in pre-season.

“Zack and Aniss are good young local players who are hungry to play at a higher level.

“They’ve shown plenty of enthusiasm, have a great attitude and work ethic. Those traits will stand them in good stead as they keep working hard to get up to the level and physicality of the NPL.”

Aniss and Zack have played at various grassroots Gold Coast clubs. Laghai began his football at Runaway Bay when he was five and has also had stints at Pac Pines, Musgrave, Bond Uni, Magic and most recently Gold Coast Knights. He was attracted to the United because of the club’s youth development outlook.

“I’m settling in well, they’re a good bunch of boys, very welcoming and Kristian’s always been very helpful and supportive which has helped me settle in too.”

Kallinikos began his football at Merrimac as a junior and moved to Magic. Most recently he’s been playing at Surfers and is looking forward to the challenge of stepping up to the next level.

“This is a great opportunity for me and I’m keen to see what the NPL has in-store.

“I want to see what I can do and prove to myself that I can play at this level and be a part of a successful squad in a successful season.”

Welcome on-board lads!

Both players will be involved in a local pre-season fixture tomorrow night when the Men take on Robina at 7.30pm at Ron Penhalligon Way.
