Gold Coast United v Moreton Bay United – NPL Rd16 preview

United face Moreton Bay United at home tomorrow night in the opening match of the second half of the 2019 National Premiers Leagues Queensland competition.

After a bye in Rd15 and with catch up games against Redlands and SWQ Thunder up their sleeve, United sit 5th on the ladder, at the front of the pack nipping at the heels of the top four.

United’s opponents on Saturday night lie 7th on the table and will be out to repeat their Rd1 win over Untied in the season opener.

United Player to Watch

Justyn McKay has been troubled by minor niggling injuries in the first half of the season limiting him to just six appearances so far this season. But those appearances have been telling and underline the difference a fit and firing McKay makes to the United squad. Having completed the full 90 minutes in United’s last home match against Peninsula Power and pulling up OK after that tough slog in boggy conditions, the midfielder is confident that he’s got his body right and is ready to play a more prominent role in the back half of the season.

Moreton Bay at a glance

NPL Premiers & Champions in 2015, the Pouria Nabi coached Jets finished a very creditable fourth in 2018. No repeat of that form in 2019 so far with the Jets a little hot and cold. Alex Janovsky skippers the side which has pace to burn up front in the shape of Riley Campbell and Chom Arop.  The Jets have scored more goals than United but it’s at the back that their issues lie having conceded half as many goals again as Kristian Rees’ side.

Past Encounters

The Jets won the season opener 3-2 at Wolter Park and dominated both fixtures in 2018 running out 4-1 winners in Rd 11 at home and repeating the dose at Robina Station Reserve in Rd 24, securing a 4-0 win.
