Parents: Player Mental Health

The aim of the club community wellness program is to promote and maintain the mental health and wellness of players and parents.

The program has been developed in the belief that having good mental health is essential for your son/daughter to enjoy their football and achieve their potential.
Mental health is a continuum that we move along all the time depending on how things are going for us in our lives ranging from thriving (optimal well-being) through feeling okay (coping/reacting) to struggling (not coping/injured/ill), and even crisis.
Headspace, a Commonwealth Government youth mental health service, has identified 7 steps to a ‘healthy headspace’. Applying the 7 steps will help your son/daughter (and you) live life in a positive and meaningful way and also help you bounce back when times get tough.
The 7 Steps to a Healthy Headspace.

  1. Get into life. Set a goal you want to achieve everyday.
  2. Learn skills for a tough time. Practice breathing techniques. Try journalling. Explore mental health apps
  3. Eat well. Nourish your body with fruits and veggies and foods high in fibre.
  4. Create Connections. Spend time with friends and family.
  5. Stay Active.  Improves sleep. Helps manage stress and boosts mood.
  6. Get enough sleepHave a sleep routine. Switch off electronics 1 hour before bed.

Signs your son/daughter might be struggling with their mental health:
  • A sudden drop in motivation or performance.
  • Changes in eating, sleeping or physical health.
  • Withdrawal from teammates and friends.
  • Mood swings or increased irritability.
  • Perfectionism and self- criticism that goes too far.
See your family doctor If you are concerned about your son’s/daughter’s mental health
