One of the greatest skills for success as a football player is being coachable.
When a player is coachable, they consistently show:
- Receptiveness: Openly listening to feedback without defensiveness.
- Proactivity: Actively seeking out feedback rather than waiting for it.
- Application: Taking the advice and consistently putting it into practice to change behaviour.
- Humility: Recognising there’s always room for growth and improvement.
- Resilience: Handling constructive criticism and setbacks with a positive attitude and motivation.
- Self-Awareness: Understanding one’s strengths and weaknesses.
- Accountability: They take responsibility for their performance and mistakes, instead of blaming teammates, officials, or external factors.
- Inquisitiveness: They proactively seek out additional feedback or ask specific questions about how to improve in certain areas, showing a strong internal motivation.
- Strong Work Ethic: They work hard in every training session and are committed to consistent improvement, not just relying on natural talent.
Michael Jordan once said, “My best skill was that I was coachable.”
