United Women V Lions – NPLWQLD Rd13
After a tough away trip last week at Albany Creek, the Gold Coast United Women will be looking to re-capture the form that saw them out-class the fancied Capalaba and share the points with The Gap at home in recent matches.
United come up against another of the current NPL Women’s top two when the in-form Lions FC make their way down the M1 for their first taste of Tallebudgera on Saturday.
United player to watch
Hollie Jarrett has started to hit her straps as part of United’s attacking formation. The former ‘Bangalow Bluedog’ has a ton of pace, oodles of determination and a big motor that sees her pressuring defensive lines all game. Looking to test herself at the next level after dominating in the Northern New South Wales women’s competition, Hollie has brought an irrepressible energy and infectious enthusiasm to the Women’s squad.
Lions at a glance
Coached by Rob Askew, the uber successful gaffer that previously guided The Gap, Lions have added some strength to an already competitive squad that finished 2nd behind the Gap in 2018. Lions remain the only undefeated team in the NPLW 2019 competition thanks in part to the goal scoring exploits of a powerful front third that includes Tegan Riding, Whitney Knight and Mariel Hecher. At the back former United keeper Cassandra Zaffina and Gold Coast City/Palm Beach WNPL defender Jamilla Riley are key figures in a rock solid defence that has conceded the least number of goals in the 2019 competition to date.
Past Encounters
Lions took the points in both 2018 meetings between the clubs prevailing 3-2 in Rd3 at Lions Stadium and running away with the return fixture at Station Reserve in Rd16 5-0.
