United v Magpie Crusaders – NPL Qld Rd9 Preview
The competition’s longest away trip for United today as they head north to face the 6th placed Magpie Crusaders tonight in Mackay. After falling to their first defeat in 6 matches against Olympic a trip north may be just the tonic the squad needs after spending the week focusing on some areas that the visitors exploited last start.
According to United midfielder Jason Campbell, “we didn’t really turn up to the game. It was tough conditions – it was stinking hot – and we just didn’t show up.”
“With good sides like Olympic, they’re going to score goals and take their chances. They just got on top physically.”
United player to watch
Right back Tyler Wagstaffe looks set to return to the starting side after sitting out the Olympic match due to suspension. Wagstaffe’s contribution to United in attack has been a standout in the season so far, along with his tenacious defending and astute positional play. Several of United’s goals have come on the back of penetrating runs forward from the Tallebudgera local. ‘Waggie’ also banged in a worldie against Strikers and will be looking to repeat that feat at Sologinkin Oval.

Magpies at a glance
The Magpie Cursaders finished 11th in 2018, a creditable debut season for the fledgling club. A change of coach in the off-season has seen a revitalised Mackay make a bright start to their 2019 campaign. Currently sitting just three points adrift of United, the Chris Gallo coached Magpies have notched up three wins and a draw in their six outings so far.
Their inspirational Captain Michael Lyall looks the biggest threat in attack, having scored seven goals in the season to date from six appearances.
Past Encounters
