United Run Continues

Gold Coast United’s mid-season surge continues, a solitary goal was enough to take all three points in a tight affair against Brisbane Roar Youth last night. The win, United’s fourth on the bounce, lifts the Surfsider’s on the ladder to within sight of a top four spot.

The Young Roar shaded the first half with slightly more possession but teenage keeper, Eligh Williams, was rarely troubled in goal although he was called on to produce a smart save to deny a Nathan Yoon shot early. United had their chances too, JJ Prasad going closest just before the half hour. The first half remained scoreless, 0-0 at the break.

With more possession after the turn, United came into the game in the second half and it took some scrambling defending from the home side to keep the visitors at bay. The game’s only goal came mid-way through the second half when substitute Curtis Stollery tapped home from close range to put United ahead. And that’s how it remained, the Coast running out 1-0 winners.

United’s recent winning streak has come off the back of a very settled starting lineup with several key players back from injury helping their cause. Matt Green returned last night from a quad strain adding further starch defensively and variety going forward as he controls the tempo, earning accolades post match from many for his performance.

United welcome cellar-dwellers Redlands United to Station Reserve next Saturday looking to reverse the result from Rd3 when the hosts took the points at the Cleveland Showgrounds.
