Together we are united

Parent: The Optimistic Footballer

What is Optimism:

Optimism is a mental attitude characterised by hope and confidence in success and a positive future. Optimists tend to view hardships as learning experiences or temporary setbacks.

Footballers who have an optimistic explanatory style are more likely to believe they will succeed in the future. There have been various studies that show the benefits of being optimistic such as:  Better performance and less variability.

Helping your son/daughter to be optimistic requires a delicate balance between providing encouragement and fostering independence. The path to playing at the highest is often unpredictable, making optimism as important as physical skill.

Ways to maintain your son’s/daughter’s optimism in Football.

Shift the Focus to the Process

Optimism is often fragile when tied solely to outcomes. Help your son/daughter shift their focus toward controllable variables .
  • Mastery Goals: Encourage them to focus on specific technical improvements (e.g., a better weak-foot touch) rather than winning.
  • Celebrate Effort: Acknowledge their discipline in training, recovery, and nutrition, regardless of the match result.
Promote Psychological Autonomy

Your son/daughter will be more optimistic when they feel they have ownership over their own career.

  • Normalize Setbacks: Remind them that every professional player has dealt with rejection, injury, and being dropped. Frame these as “data points” rather than “judgments of character.”
  • Reframe “Failure”: Use the “Not Yet” mindset. If they struggle with a specific tactical concept, they haven’t failed; they just haven’t mastered it yet.

Take-Away Message:

Your goal is to be your son’s/daughter’s “Safe Harbour.” Your role is to provide unconditional support. Optimism persists when a player knows their base, their family, remains steady regardless of the highs and lows of the sport.
