Parent: Building Resilience

Resilience is critically important for a talented youth footballer.

It allows them to overcome inevitable setbacks such as mistakes, injuries, or losses by maintaining focus, managing pressure, and transforming obstacles into opportunities for growth.

Key reasons resilience is vital:
  • Faster Recovery from Errors:
Mentally tough players do not make fewer mistakes, but they recover faster, preventing a single bad play from ruining a match.

  • Performance Under Pressure:
It provides the mental toughness needed to handle high-stakes situations, such as crucial matches or  trials, improving performance consistency.

  • Development of “Growth Mindset“:
Resilient players see failure as a learning opportunity rather than a sign of incompetence, allowing them to continuously develop their skills.

Key Ways to Build Your Son’s/Daughter’s Resilience:
  • Praise Effort, Not Talent or Outcomes:
Focus on the process, such as hard work, determination, and improvement, rather than winning, goals scored, or skill level.

  • Encourage Independence (Let Them Struggle):
Resist the urge to fix every problem, such as negotiating with coaches or dwelling on mistakes. Allowing them to navigate challenges builds ownership and problem-solving skills.

  • Listen More, Coach Less:
Avoid “car ride coaching”, constantly reviewing mistakes on the way home. Instead, ask open-ended questions like “What did you enjoy most today?” or “What was the hardest part?” to let them process their emotions.

  • Normalise Failure:
Help them understand that mistakes are essential for growth. Encourage them to reflect on what they can learn from a poor performance, rather than fearing it.

  • Model Resilient Behaviour:
Actively show resilience yourself by staying positive in your day-to-day life.

By implementing these, you help turn your son’s/daughter’s disappointments into opportunities for growth, creating a footballer who is mentally tough and passionate about their development.
