United v Magpie Crusaders – NPL Qld Rd24 Preview

United will look to get back in the winners circle against the visiting Magpie Crusaders at Coplicks in rd24 of the National Premier Leagues Queensland competition today.

After two tough games inside a week against top four opposition United will look to build some momentum in the end part of the season starting against a Magpies side who are flirting with the relegation places. Expect no quarter given by the visitors from Mackay.

United player to watch

Jackson Boyd will be out to keep his first clean sheet since joining United from local Gold Coast Premier League side, Palm Beach. It’s been a baptism of fire for Boyd coming up against two of the best attacking outfits in the comp in his first few games for the club – including the Knights in the derby and Olympic last week away. Jackson was at his best to deny several clear cut chances against those sides and will be hoping he has a little less to do against the Magpies.

Magpies at a glance

The Magpie Crusaders finished 11th in 2018, a creditable debut season for the fledgling club. After a bright start to season 2019, new coach Chris Gallo departed as did skipper Michael Lyall who’s risen from the ashes of late to try to steer the Magpies away from the relegation zone. New coach Henry Kennell has his work cut out if the Magpies are to avoid the cut with his side only two points clear of the Pride who are breathing down their necks.

Past Encounters

United recorded a solid 4-0 win away in Mackay in March with Brandon Reeves on fire that night. Honors were shared in 2018 – a win apiece for both clubs. United prevailed 4-1 in the first meeting in Rd7 at Meakin Park but fell 3-1 to the home side in the reverse fixture away.
