United Claim Cup

Gold Coast United, the Logan Inter City Cup 2019 Champions

A comprehensive 5-0 win for Gold Coast United over Eastern Suburbs  last night secured the 2019 Logan Inter City Cup title, the first silverware for the Men and an exclamation mark on a strong performance across the Club in the pre-season tournament.

The tone was set early when Cian Cuba opened the scoring inside two minutes, finishing sublimely after some measured build up down the right. United continued to press but failed to create any clear cut chances as Easts worked their way into the game creating the odd opportunity themselves but rarely threatening Griffin Bambach in United’s goal. One nil to United at the turn.

After the break it was all United off the back of a strong defensive display. With captain Michael Thwaite marshalling the defence, the platform was set for United to press forward with confidence. This brought early dividends when Ryan Cavanah made a penetrating run down the right, his cross into the box was clinically put away by the in-form Brandon Reeves to double the lead.

Shortly after it was Cavanah again the provider, he found Conor Smith free in the box who was bundled over drawing a penalty. Smith stepped up and duly converted from the spot, United looked in control. Three nil soon became four when Cavanah set Jarran Pfefferkorn free and his pin-point cross from the right was headed home emphatically by Reeves, a double for the striker. The final goal came after captain Michael Thwaite snuffed out a promising Easts counter with a thumping tackle and the ensuing attack finding Cian Cuba in space who banged home his second goal.

The win rounded out a fantastic day for the club with five squads winning their finals – U9’s, U10’s, U13’s, U14’s & Men.

Congratulations to all squads who acquitted themselves with distinction and a huge shout out to the Committee and volunteers from Rochedale Rovers, a really well organised and run tournament.

Next weekend sees the commencement of the National Premier Leagues Queensland 2019 competition for the Men & NPL Boys.

The boys start their season with games against Eastern Suburbs on Saturday at Coplicks, the first competitive matches at the club’s new home.

The Men begin their 2019 campaign with an away trip to Wolter Park where they face Moreton Bay next Saturday. Kick-off in that game is at 6.30pm.
