United outgunned by Jets

Moreton Bay consolidated their grip on fourth place with a solid performance last night at Station Reserve, running out 4-1 winners.

The visitors came into the match just 3 days after another catch-up game on Thursday night – the short turn around showed. But the Jets had enough quality across the park to capitalise on United’s lack of cutting edge.

The home side got the jump on the visitors from the gun who to their credit persisted in playing out from the back inspite of the pressure. United failed to capitalise on their early territorial dominance and as good teams do, the Jets defended stoically and looked dangerous on the counter which led to goals from Jazmyn Perin & Ali Schaefer after weathering United’s early pressure.

Michael Cook, Head Coach of GCU was frustrated by how the first half unfolded.

“I spent the majority of the first half facing the opponent’s goal.

“They did counter attack well, but to go into half time behind was so against the way the game went.”

The Jets third goal came shortly after the restart when United failed to deal with a corner and an unfortunate own goal ensued.

According to Cook, “it’s very disappointing to concede goals from corners, we need to be better at defending set pieces.”

The home side responded quickly, Georgia Elliston headed home a Deeanna Thompson corner but it was all in vain. Soon after Jemima Head bundled home another set piece to seal the points for the visitors in a determined but less than fluent performance.

“If we had been more clinical in front of goal ourselves we could have got more out of the match,” Cook concluded.

Some injury concerns from the match for Cook to ponder as he prepares his squad for the visit of Western Pride next Sunday.

Kimberly Shrimpton failed to return after the break, replaced by Kijana Walker. Centre backs Jayde Lowe and skipper Neesa Doyle both hobbling after the match. And keeper Cassie Zaffina required mid-game attention after a goal mouth scramble and collision.

Next Sunday’s match is set down for Runaway Bay Soccer Club – kick off at 2pm.
