United’s goal still high

Buoyed by a fantastic team performance in their 2-0 win over Moreton Bay, United have renewed confidence ahead of the visit of SWQ to Station Reserve tonight.

That result against the previously high-flying Jets bodes well for a renewed push by the Surfsiders towards a top four spot, still achievable barring slip ups. Sitting 4 wins adrift of fourth place, United are well aware that games against teams placed lower on the ladder are ‘must wins’ and opportunities to build on the momentum a result against a top four side brings.

Coach Michael Cook knows the importance of backing up last weekend’s impressive performance against the Thunder.

“We need to build momentum from our recent win by going on a run of several wins in a row now for the rest of the season, so the message to the players is to perform at our best for every single match.”

United are a side awash with talent which is yet to string a run of consistent performances together. But the signs are positive, a squad with few injuries and a growing belief.

Cook’s focus this week at training was to not only maintain the levels set during the win over the Jets, but to keep improving.

“There will be no complacency for this game, we know the Thunder will turn up ready to cause us problems.

“The players know that ladder positions are irrelevant once both teams step on to the field to play.”

While striving for consistency for the remainder of the season is the key for United, their opponents will be keen to shore up a leaky defence. The Thunder sit at the bottom of the WNPL ladder with just one win this season to their name, having conceded a stack of goals including shipping nine last start at home against Logan.

While not one to chase records or get too carried away with personal achievements, current Golden Boot leader Meg McElligott will be eyeing an opportunity to repeat her early season goal haul against the Thunder. The power forward bagged six goals when the two sides met in Gatton with United convincing 8-1 winners back in March.

Action gets underway at Robina at 5.30pm today.
